TRAVEL & SAFETY

Travel & Medical Insurance

We strongly recommend that you buy comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover the country (or countries) that you are traveling in.

Visas

It’s a good idea to check visa requirements, as each country varies. Make sure you leave plenty of time to get a visa sorted out if required.

Travel research

Research the country and region you want to travel to in advance before you make any commitment with a host. Check government websites for travel advice in different countries and do your own research. Read up on local customs and traditions. We recommend you research things such as attitudes towards women, codes of dress, rules on alcohol etc.

Local language

It’s always a good idea to learn a bit of the local lingo before you travel there.

Common sense & instinct

When it comes to traveling a lot of it comes down to common sense. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. Trust your instinct. It’s a good idea always to tell someone else where you’re going and what your plans are.

Mobile/cell phone

It’s worth checking out whether your phone will work abroad or if you can pick up a cheap one when you arrive so you’re not stuck without a phone.

Plenty of contact

Before staying with a host or arranging to meet other travelers through the Meet Up travel board we recommend that you have plenty of contact with them beforehand.

Cultural differences

Cultural differences make traveling amazing, intriguing & funny. But sometimes they can cause awkward situations…so it can be a good idea to read up on the country you’re traveling to before you go. That way you might avoid making your first ‘faux-pas’ the moment you step off the plane!

Vaccinations

We recommend that you check about necessary vaccinations in the area you are travelling to and ensure that your vaccinations are up-to-date.
